Cousin Convo- Gregg Feaster
Pennsylvania is home to 18 state forest hiking trails. So, a trail gets the title of “state forest trail” when it’s in a designated state forest and managed by the PA Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR). One of the coolest ones is the Mid State Trail (MST)—it cuts right through Bedford County and takes you on an epic journey through Buchanan, Rothrock, Bald Eagle, Tiadaghton, and Tioga State Forests.
The Mid State Trail, nicknamed “Pennsylvania’s Wildest Trail,” spans over 325 miles. Kicking off at the Maryland border in Buchanan State Forest and making its way through the heart of the state, the MST wraps up at the New York State line.
Local Gregg Feaster is a third of the way through hiking the entirety of the MST. He refers to the Mid State Trail as the county’s best option for views and exercise, excluding private property. Gregg, who works in the truck insurance services industry, recently founded Cork & Compass Craft Distillery, which will open on Railroad Street in Bedford this winter.
Q: What is the most adventurous thing you have ever done?
Gregg: The Appalachian Trail four-state challenge was the most adventurous and challenging experience ever. This year’s heat wave didn’t help at all. The objective is to touch four states in 24 hours. While most participants came up from Georgia, we did it in reverse order: Pennsylvania, Maryland, West Virginia, and we ended at the Virginia line.
We started in Pennsylvania at 4:30 AM and hiked through Maryland, reaching Harpers Ferry around 11 PM after covering 40 miles. After leaving Harpers Ferry, we climbed the ridge into Virginia, starting that leg of the journey around 1:30 AM, which meant we had hiked for about 21 hours. By the time we finished, we had covered 47 miles.
Q: Where is your favorite place to spend time outdoors locally?
Gregg: Southern Bedford County in Buchannon State Forest.
Haley: Gregg was formerly the president of the Friends of Buchanan State Forest.
Q: What micro-adventure would you recommend locally?
Gregg: I recommend the Mid State Trail in Bedford County for scenic views and a more rigorous workout. It is steep and presents challenges. The area is remote, with limited water sources, so it’s essential to be prepared. Day hiking the Mid State Trail is excellent practice for multi-day backpacking due to its remoteness.
I use the MST to train physically and to prepare my gear for longer hikes. There are multiple connector points and parking options along the trail. Starting with just two miles is a great way for beginners to try it out without planning for seven to fifteen miles.
Q: What prep should one consider if it is their first visit?
Gregg: Regarding the Mid State Trail, it depends on what time of year you’re going. I’d suggest joining the MST Facebook page and checking out the reviews from folks who’ve been there around the same time you’re planning your trip.
Just be prepared for different conditions out there! Getting started doesn’t have to break the bank; usually, pricier gear is lighter. It took me a solid two years to finally get a nice backpack!
Q: What item do you always have on hand before you head outdoors?
Gregg: It depends on the season, but I always bring a headlamp. I don’t usually get lost, but I can lose track of time. I never leave without my emergency blanket, headlamp, lighter, and Kate’s Bar.
Haley: Mark your calendars and remember to wear blaze orange for you and your pets!
Please note that the hunting season in Pennsylvania has been extended to include the following Sundays in 2024: November 17, November 24, and December 1.
The Mid State Trail Association protects and maintains the MST. Access more information about the MST through the Mid State Trail Association’s website: hike-mst.org.
